L.A. SEES RECORD LOW HOMICIDE RATES.
According to the L.A. Times, the LAPD reports that Los Angeles is on track to record the lowest homicide rates in decades. Compared to 1992 when homicides reached 1,200 for the year, 2010 looks like it's on track to record somewhere around 300.
This is frankly astonishing. For one, it flies in the face of conventional wisdom that says a bad economic climate triggers higher crime rates. Clearly we're in an economic sinkhole. So how do you explain this drop?
I've got a few theories, but I'd like to hear from readers. What's your take on this?

My opinion is that the bad economy has also dealt a blow to the dope game. For one, there is no money and that means less drug deals. Fewer drug deals means less confrontations and less money available for purchasing weapons. Many gangsters are out trying to pay bills and eat. This economy is leaving no money to buy bullets or gas up the ride to go do a drive by.
The bad economy has also left many parents without jobs.Guess where these parents are at,home. So many young gangsters, trying to make a name, cant get out of the house. Mom and/or Pops are at home on their ass(more supervision).
So, a bad economy equals no money to buy drugs,AKs,bullets, gas etc. and more parents watching their kids at home.
Good post 1:08 PM. Also, the fact that so many of the worst of the worst of the not so young gangsters are locked down for long stretches.
Everyone has a cell phone with a camera/video camera on it ready to go today and crimes get recorded more than ever before. Combine that with the massive increase in new laws and stricter sentencing guidelines and the combo of ease of getting evidence with tough law enforcement are all factors as well.
If the crime rate is to be the ultimate measuring stick as to whether or not something works, then we also have to attribute the low crime rates to community groups that work for peace amongst gang members, as well as cease fires and truce movements amongst the gangs themselves, not to mention some of the efforts by the hip hop community to bring peace. We can't just pat police on the back and call it a day, because if things had gone the other way and crime was steadily rising, we'd be chalking these grass roots peace movements in hip hop community and in the ghettos and barrios up to being a total waste of time and effort, and using the crime rate to prove it.
I'm for blaming/crediting all partied involved.
Crime rate's up? It's the fault of the community, the police, the educational system, the economic system, the government, the whole 9.
Crime is down? We have to consider the efforts of the community, the police, the educational system, the economic system, the government, the whole 9.
True, the economy is pretty bad so it's safe to say that the economy isn't the only reason gangs exist. However there are peace movements in the ghetto, many of them working around the clock for peace. So now that the results are in, they deserve their fair share of the credit. Can't have it both ways.
these figures are totally inaccurate and is a slap in the face to the people of los angeles, i know for a fact that alot of murders go unreported by sherrifs and lapd , why ? i cannot answer that, but it must have to do with la politiks..
300 murders only give me a break , ask the mortuaries if bizziness is slow.
Sort of how a lot of cities back then or at least ten years ago did not report crime, not only homicides were kept from the public but robberies, burglaries, rape, etc. Brings people in to areas where everyone's moving out due to crime. Can it have something to do with money? I think so.
